CONSTRUCTION work to extend Hepburn Avenue south from Beechboro Road to Marshall Road will begin next month. The City of Swan recently received $5 million Federal funding to advance stage two of its Hepburn Avenue extension plan.
The council last week approved construction of 1.3km of single lane carriageway with dual carriageway intersections.
The City plans to make the whole stretch of road dual carriageway, but City acting chief executive Jim Coten said the funding was not currently available.
Mr Coten said stage two of the extension would relieve congestion on Alexander Drive and Beach Road and improve access to the Malaga industrial area.
Stage one, which is yet to be opened because of Western Power street lighting delays, extended Hepburn Avenue from Alexander Drive to Beechboro Road.
The third and final stage will link Hepburn Avenue with the Reid and Tonkin highways at a four-way intersection.
Mr Coten said studies commissioned by Main Roads WA and the City indicated the completed plan would provide significant relief to the area’s major road arteries.
Stage two construction should finish in April 2011.
