PERMANENT residents at the Swan Valley Tourist Park are infuriated that there will still be no extra bus services to their area, despite the State Government rolling in 650 new buses over the next decade.

The State Government last week announced that the new buses would replace older vehicles, with no plans to add to the existing fleet for five years.

Park resident Laurie Hill said for the nearly 100 residents in the park relying on just two bus services a day, it was disappointing that they have been left virtually stranded along West Swan Road.

On weekdays there is one bus into Midland at 9am, returning at 4pm, and no services on weekends, which Mrs Hill said was unacceptable for those travelling in for medical appointments or shopping.

“We have no means of going anywhere. It was very nice of the government to give us free public transport on Sundays, but we would like some buses to go with them.”

Having lived in the park for 13 years, Mrs Hill said they weren’t asking for much when they expected the State Government to provide a basic bus service to their area.

“People outside just don’t understand the ramifications,” she said. “This is taking away our independence.”

The residents have turned to West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti for help, and hope the State Government will listen to their request.

Ms Saffioti was concerned this latest announcement would mean for residents in the Swan Valley, who despite living in one of the country’s fastest growing areas, have very limited services.

I applaud the focus that MLA Rita Saffioti is placing on this issue but she has buckleys of ever getting increased bus services into the Swan Valley and surrounds while a liberal government is in power. Her predecessor Jaye Radisich who's then electorate covered part of the Swan Valley also failed to convince the PTA of extra bus services in the region. Unfortunately, the liberal government have never exercised the need for increased public transport anywhere ever, the last time they did something was when the closed down the Perth to Fremantle railway line. I now believe that the accidental premier "Barney" has canned the Ellenbrook rail project like everything else he has done since being in power. The Swan Valley is now an important tourist attraction approximately nine kilometers from the CBD yet you cannot get public transport there unless you walk from the Guildford railway station.

I agree with this. Trying 2 get a bus into outlying areas such as Ellenbrook is in my word impossible if u don't drive. Also 4get the industrial areas such as Kewdale, Malaga, Wangara and Canning Vale. Unless u are on a main road in one of these areas 4get trying with public transport u might as well have a car.

My sympathies to you and your fellow residents about the lack of buses. Whilst we here in Ballajura are extremely well off in comparison to you we too are having a continuous battle to improve our bus services particularly at night and on the weekends and also to get all low floor buses that are accessible to everyone not just the fit and young.

The big problem is that all the beauracrats think the only public transport worrying about is trains

If they were made to do all their travelling by bus day and night, on weekends , public holidays I bet my bottom cent (do not have a dollar) that the situation would change then.

If I can support you in some way let me know.
