WA heart disease patients are being urged to share their stories as part of a research project designed to link people who have, or have recovered, from heart disease.

Researchers from Edith Cowan University have spent four years connecting heart patients, their carers and friends and family so that they can share their experiences, discuss health issues and support each other online.

Heartnet, the online website designed by Edith Cowan University (ECU), is funded by the Australian Research Council and supported by the Heart Foundation in WA.

Now, ECU researchers say they want more people to visit the site to tell their stories of heart disease, as well as stroke and blood vessel disease patients to help them develop a profile of people with the conditions and improve the site’s ability to help.

ECU senior researcher and South Perth resident Trevor Cullen said the website was available to anyone over 18.

“Heart disease patients need support to recover and Heartnet allows them to find that support in the comfort of their own home,” Dr Cullen said.

“They have incredible strength and the website allows them to share that strength and their experiences with others.”

For more details about the website, and to participate in the research project on heart disease, view online at www.heartnet. com.au or contact Dr Cullen on 9370 6354 or t.cullen@ecu.edu.au.

I joined the HeartNET forum 2 yrs ago as I had lost 2 friends to this insidious disease which is often aptly refered to as the "Silent Killer". The ripple effect is felt by family and carers who are at the forefront of care, but also by friends who dont always know the full details and therefore have little knowledge of whats happened or why! HeartNET filled that breach for me: Knowledge, Support, Encouragement, Love & Friendship! I would highly recommend this site for anyone who has been sadly touched in any way by a heart event!

After having an MI & a Aortic Valve implant in 2006, I found that Dr's could only tell me the medical side of things like what to eat, amount of & what exercise to do,but nothing on How to live with this condition. It wasn't till I found HeartNet that I got the full picture. By getting friendly advice from members & reading their stories could I start living with this disease & one day beat it. knowing I'm not alone & that someone else has gone through what I was facing is better than any medicine. Since joining HeartNet not only have I been helped but have been able to help others but some great friendships have been formed from this.
Thanks HeartNet.

Heartnet has been a god send for me, at 23 i was diognosed wiht a rare heart condition know as prinzmetals angina and have had 3 heart attackks because of it and have also developed atrial fibralation and am currently wait for surgery in August and everyone on the site has been by my side the whole way through. As there is very few places for young people to obtain support from others who have a heart condtion this site has not only provided this opportunity but also assisted in keeping me out of the depths of depression in which some heart patients can fall into, when i have struggled to take my medications because of the side effects i have had encouragment, when i have been afriad of what lies ahead i have had listening ears and when i have had questions, i have had not only answers but also personal stories shared with me to help me along.
